Nerdy Affiliate Adventures In Affiliate Marketing Land

Traffic University Exposed and Media Buying

Posted by JasperP on September 30th, 2008

I recently watched the Traffic University Exposed seminar and it was exciting to be able to talk to Carlos and Lupe live!  It was exciting to be able to pick their brain on their techniques on Internet Marketing.  It was also a bit entertaining too! - (Carlos is one freaky cat.. lol).  They have big hearts and it was a pleasure just chatting with them.

If you’ve never heard of Traffic Tactics, the basic idea is that they use media buying to generate tons of traffic online.  According to them, banner advertising is NOT dead.  In fact, media buying is done by big name companies all the time (You’ve probably seen the NetFlix banner all over the place).

They focus more on banner advertising rather than the usual PPC marketing that we see from other Internet Marketers.  The cool thing about banner advertising is that you can virtually get an unlimited amount of traffic directly from web sites or through ad networks like Casale Media, Tribal Fusion, etc.

Now, I almost was able to ask a question on the phone, but they had to cut it short because the seminar was getting pretty lengthy.  I wanted to ask them about my own experience with buying media.  About a month or two ago, I experimented with AdBrite, which is a self-serve ad network.  You can buy media at a CPC or CPM basis which is pretty cool.  I noticed they mentioned it in the “Media Buying Secrets” guide (which is free when you sign up for their free newsletter) and I decided to try it out.  I basically wanted to find out what I was doing wrong. I think I have a better idea with it now, so I guess I’ll give it a try again later on.

Listening to the seminar tonight, I realized that I think I was optimizing for the wrong criteria.  I was optimizing for which ads had a higher CTR when I should’ve been optimizing for higher CONVERSION RATES.  If a particular ad converts better, but has a lower CTR, that would be the winner right?

Another interesting point they made tonight is the emphasis of SPLIT-TESTING.  They split test so much that they even split-test PEOPLE.  Sounds odd, but one of the questions that was asked tonight was about where to find a good designer.  Lupe says to split-test designers and see which one does a better job.

Come to think of it, imagine if the working world was like that… each company hires 2 people for the same position and will keep the better one - hmmm, I wonder if they do that already.

Anyway, I just wanted to share my thoughts about them.  If you want to learn more about media buying and banner advertising, sign up for their free newsletter and you can get access to their free guide and hours of free video seminars.

Internet Marketing And The Business Mindset

Posted by JasperP on August 4th, 2008

993147_42341823.jpgSo how bad do you want to have Internet Marketing work for you? Or even have a successful business for that matter?  I believe that it comes from this inner desire to change yourself and to fulfill your dreams.  But how bad do you want it?

Here’s a little story that might help illustrate this:

Once upon a time, there was a guy named Bob who would sit on his porch all day with his pet dog, Fido.  Jack, who likes to take walks around his neighborhood,  always passes by Bob on his way to the store.  Everyday, Jack would hear Fido constantly whining, but he would just lie there all day.

One day, Jack decided to ask Bob, “Hey Bob, how come your dog is always whining?”.  Bob replies, “Well, it’s because Fido has a tack in his foot.”.  “Then how come Fido doesn’t try to remove it?”, Jack asks.

“Because it doesn’t hurt bad enough”, Bob says.

Now that probably wasn’t best story in the world, but it does illustrate a point.  If something hurts bad enough, then people tend to take action to improve their situation.  A lot of people are comfortable with their situation and never go beyond that.

Being able to materialize your dreams is something that comes from within yourself.  When you find your reason to fulfill you dreams, then you’ll go beyond the failures and obstacles to reach your destination.

In this business, failure is not an option. You will most likely fail at some point doing this type of work.  Why? It’s just a part of doing business.  Some things work and some things don’t.  Once you improve your tolerance for failure, you will start improving your business mindset.

With Internet Marketing, there are so many things that can go wrong and so many variables to take into account.  Demand, competition, copywriting, data analysis, coding, design, work habits, learning ability, etc, etc.  I could probably go on and on, but you need to understand what your strengths and weaknesses are in order to compete as a marketer.  This means that you’re going to be learning some things that you have never learned before and the learning curve can be kind of steep.

Remain persistent and push forward through all the failures and you might find yourself in a profitable situation.

“Fail as fast as you can.  Get it over with and move on.”

Top 11 Reasons Why I LOVE Affiliate Marketing

Posted by JasperP on June 22nd, 2008

Affiliate Marketing is a great field to be in. I’ve been actively doing this type of Internet Marketing for about a year and I absolutely love it.  I highly recommend it to anyone that wants to get out of their day job and start a business online.  Here are 11 reasons why I recommend it:

  1. You can choose your own hours - You can work as little as 4 hours a week or as much as 80 hours a week.  It’s your choice.
  2. You can work from home while keeping your day job - This type of business allows enough flexibility to keep your day job while you work on your affiliate marketing business.
  3. Requires little startup capital - There are ways to do affiliate marketing without spending a dime.  For example, doing article marketing using ezinearticles.com to generate traffic to your squidoo.com lens while promoting a clickbank product.
  4. You can make money from your interests - The things we are passionate for can serve as an opportunity to make money online.  For example, if you enjoy shopping for shoes, you can create a site on different types of shoes, depending on your interests.
  5. No inventory or customer service required - You are promoting as an affiliate so that means that the merchant takes care of the hard stuff.  No need to have boxes and storage for your products and definitely no need for a customer service center to handle the nasty calls!
  6. You can promote virtually ANYTHING online - Nowadays, there are so many programs that allow you to sell anything online.  At the very least, you can promote an amazon.com or ebay.com product. They pretty much have everything!
  7. No boss to report to - I hated having a boss, I felt like I was walking on thin glass around him. In affiliate marketing, there are no bosses to keep you in check or tell you your doing a horrible job.
  8. You can take vacations whenever you want - You don’t have to work for 1-2 years to get 4 weeks of vacation per year.  If you worked hard enough on your marketing campaigns, I’m sure you’ll feel the need to give yourself a well-deserved vacation.
  9. You can still work on vacation! - Since you earned that well-deserved vacation, you can still check your campaigns and statistics because all you need is an Internet connection. Lol!
  10. You can make more money than you ever dreamed about - There are many affiliate marketers making THOUSANDS of dollars per month.  Some make more money in a month than people in a day job for a year.  Check out http://s.eriously.com to see some of the amazing checks these affiliate marketers bring in.
  11. Affiliate marketing is easily scalable - In this business, you can create more websites, promote more products, get more visitors, etc.  This is different from a service business like consulting, doctors, accountants, and others.  You’d have to higher more help to scale the business.  Affiliate Marketing is easier to scale which is one of the reasons these marketers are able to make a lot of money really fast.

So those are some of the reasons why I LOVE affiliate marketing.  The opportunities are endless, it allows you to be as creative as you want and you can do it in the comfort of your own home.

So why do YOU love affiliate marketing? (or maybe why do you hate it? lol)
