    Pitchmen – Lessons in Direct Response Marketing

    Posted by JasperP on June 1st, 2009

    If you haven’t heard about yet, there’s an awesome show called Pitchmen starring the infamous Billy Mays and Anthony Sullivan.  They talk about direct-response marketing using TV media to sell their products.

    I love this show because I can relate to a lot of the activities that go along with creating a new marketing campaign for a product/service.

    Looking at it from an Affiliate Marketing perspective, they take the same exact steps:

    1.  Find a product or service that will work well with their traffic medium.
      1. Affiliate Marketers – find a converting offer for adwords, facebook, email, etc
      2. Pitchmen – choose a product that can be sold to a wide variety of audiences on tv media.
    2. Create an ad that will sell the product/service
      1. Affiliate Marketers – write ad copy that will sell the click, sale, or lead.
      2. Pitchmen – create an informercial with a “WOW” factor demonstrating the need for the product.
    3. Buy traffic and test
      1. Affiliate Marketers – Choose keywords, placements, and/or demographics that will work well for the offer
      2. Pitchmen – Choose tv spots based on demographics and geography that are related to the targeted audience of the product.

    Calculating CPM vs CPC (Great for Facebook CPM ads!)

    Posted by JasperP on May 27th, 2009

    On facebook, you have the option of choosing CPC or CPM for your ads and you should always test your text ads with CPC first.  But when do you turn them into CPM ads?

    To answer this question, you need to collect some data from your ads and determine the maximum CPM you can pay based on the clickthrough rates and CPC for your ads.

    maximum CPM = CPC * CTR * 1000

    For example, if you are paying 0.30 CPC and getting a CTR of 0.25% then your maximum CPM that you should pay should be:

    maximum CPM = $0.30 * 0.0025 * 1000 = $0.75

    Now, I like to think in terms of CPC, so I can change the CPMs to see the different CPC costs I would be paying.  The magic formula for that is:

    CPC = [ CPM / (CTR * 1000) ]

    Using the same example as above with the 0.25% CTR,  I can plug in different CPM of $0.70, $0.50, $0.30 to see the different CPC costs:

    CPC = [ 0.70 / (0.0025 * 1000) ] = $0.28
    CPC = [ 0.50 / (0.0025 * 1000) ] = $0.20
    CPC = [ 0.30 / (0.0025 * 1000) ] = $0.12
    CPC = [ 0.20 / (0.0025 * 1000) ] = $0.08
    CPC = [ 0.10 / (0.0025 * 1000) ] = $0.04

    So you can see the potential of using CPM to lower your costs.  By writing compelling ad copy and images that grab attention, you can lower your CPC costs dramatically.

    Networking Is The Key To Success!

    Posted by JasperP on February 16th, 2009

    A few days ago, Bryn posted a very important topic on his blog titled: “Networking Is The Most Important Thing In Affiliate Marketing.”  I really believe this is critical to your success and will keep you motivated to keep working on your business.

    Some people have asked me if I did consulting and were willing to pay me for it.   I told them “fuck that.. let’s just share tips and experiences!”  I don’t mind helping people out because I can also learn from them as well.

    Anyway, just wanted to post my top places to network with other affiliate marketers:

    1. networking_aim.jpg networking_msn.jpgnetworking_gchat.gif  networking_skype.png
      Instant Messaging – I use this regularly and it’s easy to just get in contact with someone and discuss different topics of marketing.  Contact me at JasperP81 on AIM.
    2. networking_meetup202.png
      Meetup202 - The meetup202 groups created by Wes and Steven of Prosper202 are GREAT for networking with other affiliate marketers.  I’ve met tons of people through my local Los Angeles meetup.  Check out if there are Meetup202 events in your area: meetup202.com.
    3. networking_affiliatesummit.gif
      Affiliate Summit - Affiliate Summit West and Affiliate Summit East events are a MUST for affiliate marketers.  You get to connect with other marketers on a more personal level. Plus it’s great fun partying and just chillin’.  Mark your calendars: Affiliate Summit East is on Aug 9-11 @ New York City.  Check it out: affiliatesummit.com.
    4. networking_twitter.gif
      Twitter - Twitter is another networking tool that can be used to get in contact with other marketers.  Dubbed as “mini-blogging”, you can reply back and forth with people about topics that they post or “tweet”.  Follow me at twitter.com/JasperP.
    5. networking_rss_icon2.png
      Blogs - Subscribing to blogs are another way to get in contact with other marketers.  I personally use Google Reader to consolidate all the blogs that I follow.  I use this to keep an eye on the latest news in the Affiliate Marketing Industry.  Currently, I subscribe to about 100 blogs.  Check out Google Reader. It’s free! Then subscribe to this blog by clicking on my RSS link.
    6. networking_facebook.gifnetworking_linkedin.gif
      Social Networking - Facebook and LinkedIn are popular spots to get in touch with other marketers.  I just started to expand my social network so hit me up on Facebook and LinkedIn.

    7. Forums - I used to be a bit more active on forums before, however, nowadays I’m not as active as I could be, but there are quite a few affiliate marketing forums out there such as WickedFire, Prosper202, PPC-Coach, Convert2Media, Cash Tactics, Xtreme Profits, etc.  If I’m on there, my username is usually “JasperP”.
    So that should be enough to get you started.  Don’t be shy! I’ve advised people to find a buddy at the same level so that you guys can grow together and share your experiences with each other. Go out there and start meeting people!
